The sets that follow are all hand made in England. The material is a ground stone (alabaster and marble) and resin combination. These sets are coveted by chess collectors all over the world. Alice in Wonderland Set (62k gif)
The characters are all here from Lewis Carroll's famous story. Alice acts as the queens, The King of Hearts as the kings, the Mad Hatter plays the bishops, the White Knight as the knights, Tweedle Dum and Dee as the rooks and the Rabbit as the pawns. Colors are creamy white and burgundy red. The king is 3 1/2" tall.
This set goes very well with a Walnut/Maple board with 1 3/4" squares.

Isle of Lewis Chess Set (42k gif)| This set is a replica of the original,
and oldest known European chess set, discovered on the
Isle of Lewis, off the coast of Scotland. The original
can be seen in the British Museum. Color is light Tan and

Civil
War (57k gif)| This set depicts both sides of the American Civil War. For
the north, President and Mrs. Lincoln are the king and queen. Ulysses Grant
and William Sherman are both bishops, Cavalry Officers are the knights,
and the Washington Capital is the rook. For the south, Jefferson and Varina
Davis are the king and queen. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are bishops,
Cavalry Officers are the knights, and the Virginia State Capital is the
rook. Infantrymen are the pawns for both sides. The king stands 6"

American Independence (63k gif)| This set depicts both sides of the
American War of Independence. On the American side George
Washington is the king and Betsy Ross is the queen. Ben
Franklin and Thomas Jefferson are the bishops, Marquis de
LaFayette and Benedict Arnold are the knights,
Independence Hall in Philadelphia is the rook, and the
pawns are Privates of the 3rd New Jersey
Regiment, the "Jersey Blues". On the British
side George III and his wife Charlotte are the king and
queen. Prime Minister Fredrick Lord North and Sir William
Howe are the bishops, Earl Cornwallis and Benedict Arnold
are the knights, the Tower of London is the rook, and the
pawns are privates of the Grenadier Company. The king is

Camelot (51k gif)| Based on the legend of the court of King
Arthur and depicts King Arthur and Queen Guinevere as,
you guessed it, the kings and queens. King is 3"

Classical Figures (50k gif)| This set is based on a selection of
famous sculptures. Michelangelo's David is the king, a
Greek goddess is the queen, a Chinese sage represents the
bishops, a Roman horse's head as the knights, Rodin's
"The Thinker" as the rooks, and Florentine

Sherlock Holmes (71k gif)| Sherlock Holmes vs. Professor Moriarty
as the kings in this set. Moriarty's queen is Irene
Adler, Colonel Moran as the bishops, the Hounds of the
Baskervilles as the knights, Dr. Roylot as the rooks and
the pawns are thugs. On Holmes' side is Mrs. Hudson as
the queen, Dr. Watson as the bishops, Wiggins and Toby as
the knights, Inspector Lestrade as the rooks and the
pawns are policemen. The king height is approx. 5
